Ham Gordon grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and now calls Denver home. He is a technologist, entrepreneur, hip-hop producer and artist.

Professionally, Ham consults with some of the world’s largest and most complex organizations to architect, plan, and execute their collaboration and communications ecosystems.

Growing up

Ham grew up as a child of divorce and lived primarily with his mother, Julene Hunter, an artist, designer, and early female technology founder who built two software companies as personal computers began changing creative work.

As a kid, Ham did not understand how unusual her path was. She was simply his mom and, from his perspective at the time, sometimes not especially cool.

He spent much of the 1990s as a latchkey kid, learning San Francisco through its bus routes. He remembers a city still visibly shaped by hippies, artists, musicians, and older countercultures, before technology became its dominant identity.

Ham thought of himself as an athlete and musician, not a computer kid. The time alone taught him how to follow an interest without waiting for someone else to provide a plan. That independence was useful, although it could also be lonely and frustrating.

Only later did Ham appreciate the range of his mother’s life. Julene had been a concert flautist, studied architecture and visual design at UC Berkeley, and moved between software, entrepreneurship, art, education, and service.

She normalized the idea that people could define their own path. Ham did not consciously set out to follow her example. He recognized the resemblance later in his own movement through music, design, technology, and entrepreneurship.

Music and motion graphics

There was always a piano in the house, and Ham was drawn to rhythm and dance. Early favorites included MC Hammer, Michael Jackson, Deee-Lite, OMC, and the sample-based mixtures of hip-hop, dance music, and pop that filled the 1990s.

Those records led him deeper into hip-hop. Growing up in the Bay Area also exposed him to people, cultures, and musical traditions from around the world, which shaped both his taste and his approach to making music.

Ham’s first artist name came from a high school radio program. Every student needed a DJ name, so he proposed DJ Ham Sandwich. The complete version, which he found much funnier, was “MC DJ Hamilton Sandwich Junior Senior.”

That became Ham-San, the name he used for years. As his music changed, the name stopped fitting. Ham I Am grew from his name, the familiar rhythm of “Sam-I-Am,” and the idea of being comfortable declaring who you are. It was definitive without taking itself too seriously.

After signing with Unleashed Entertainment, Ham found lifelong mentors in Darren “Knocademus” Patton and Tony Tigerstyle. Darren’s home provided a safe place when Ham did not always have one elsewhere. Tony became the big brother who helped him keep his head on straight. Both remain important mentors today.

Ham also worked with Bay Area artists and producers including CMT Miraculous, Ferg, Dotrix, 4rAx of The Mekanix, and Kaz Kyzah of The Team.

By college, recording studios were not new to him. Ham had spent much of high school and his junior-college years in Bay Area music-technology programs. Through Darren and opportunities to work with CMT, he had already helped run sessions in front of SSL recording consoles. Pensado’s Place, Recording Revolution, and almost every useful mixing tutorial he could find became part of his unofficial curriculum.

Then Bay Area economics entered the conversation.

Audio looked like a difficult way to earn stable Bay Area rent without a long financial runway. Ex’pression College’s Motion Graphics program advertised a 100 percent placement rate and a considerably higher average starting salary. Ham decided to bet on himself in a different field.

The choice also made creative sense. When Ham made a song, he usually saw it as much as he heard it. A music video or visual identity was often already forming in his head. He had also watched talented artists struggle because they could not package or market what made them different.

Ham studied Applied Computer Science with a focus on Motion Graphics. He learned visual storytelling, animation, video systems, codecs, compression, computing, and networking, adding a technical understanding of video to his experience in audio.

While at Ex’pression, Ham helped form Tree City, an informal Oakland-based music collective inspired by Northern California groups such as Hieroglyphics and Living Legends. Its members pooled their studio access, equipment, and time so they could make music and learn together.

Tree City included Demaree Harrold-Davis, known as Bredd the Hedd, and Pragun “PJ” Joneja, known as Tracks by PJ. Both became lifelong friends and creative collaborators.

Much of Tree City’s music was recorded before cloud storage became normal, and many of those recordings have since been lost. The relationships lasted.

The interview that did not exist

Ham never fell out of love with music. Making Bay Area rent through music was simply difficult. Commercial AV presented another path, although technically the opportunity did not exist.

An Outlook mix-up led Ham to believe he had an interview with Thresher Communications. Thanks to Microsoft behaving exactly as expected, this particular mistake worked in his favor.

Ham drove from Reno with his last few dollars in a struggling 2001 Chrysler Sebring, received a traffic ticket on the way down the hill, and arrived to discover that nobody was expecting him.

After a full day performing installations at Google, Jody Boatwright returned to meet him. Jody asked what Ham knew and what he might contribute.

There was no open position, so Jody created one.

Thresher was a small but mighty group of AV technologists known for its early work supporting Google. Ham began with straightforward “hang and bang” installations and joined a group of colleagues who became lasting influences: TJ Cornell, Garrett McGrath, Nik Saengnavarat, Basil Kader (who later co-founded Soundware Inc.), Michael Ponticello, Chris Rouge, and Austin Reisman.

Leaders and program managers including Charles David Ray, commonly known as CDR, Ishak Kang, Brandon Sorrensen, and Dan Kaplan trusted Ham with opportunities to grow. Many became lifelong mentors and friends.

Collectively, they remain what Ham affectionately calls his secret network of dangerously valuable people. They are the colleagues he calls when he needs perspective and the people he continues to learn from.

At Google, Ham saw technology being deployed at a speed and scale he had not imagined. He committed himself to commercial AV, earned his CTS, and completed certification programs across Cisco, Crestron, Biamp, and other manufacturers.

In AV and IT, certifications can carry more practical career value than degrees. They offer a clear way to prove technical ability and advance through the industry. They also serve a commercial purpose. Manufacturers train integration partners to design, sell, install, and support their products. As an integrator invests more time in an ecosystem, recommending it begins to feel natural.

Ham calls this “indoctrination by certification.” The expertise is real, but it can quietly become product loyalty.

Thresher eventually moved Ham into client-side managed-service assignments at Yahoo, Twitter, and Uber. That transition forced him to reconsider what he had been trained to sell.

Zoom Rooms at Uber

At Uber, the equipment sale no longer mattered. Ham’s responsibility was to deliver the best experience and operational value for the company.

Under AV leaders Carlos Martinez and Mohammad Sigari, the team was trying to standardize meeting rooms across a rapidly growing global organization.

Executive spaces could include Cisco hardware and custom control systems costing more than $50,000. Other rooms simply needed to “have conferencing” at the best price available. The result was a patchwork of platforms, controls, and support requirements.

Zoom Rooms challenged that model. A Mac mini, an iPad, and a practical collection of USB devices could create a capable room for less than $5,000. Software replaced many of the dedicated boxes and proprietary programming that made traditional rooms expensive and difficult to repeat.

Ham initially resisted it. He had spent years proving that he could understand and manage AV complexity. Zoom was asking whether much of that complexity needed to exist.

Moving client-side changed the question. It no longer mattered which architecture Ham knew best or how much time he had invested in learning it. What mattered was cost, reliability, deployment speed, support effort, and the experience delivered to employees.

At Uber’s scale, the answer became clear. Zoom Rooms allowed the team to deploy more rooms, give employees a consistent interface, and manage them through one platform.

Its hardware flexibility also helped Uber expand internationally. Available equipment, import rules, radio regulations, and supply chains varied by country. Each location could use approved computers and peripherals available locally without changing the user experience.

This did not make Ham’s AV training irrelevant or change his belief that Cisco makes excellent hardware. It taught him to separate product quality from the loyalty created around it.

His certifications taught him how to build sophisticated AV systems. Moving client-side taught him when the customer did not need one.

Almost failing, then building with Zoom

The experience at Uber helped Ham earn the opportunity to lead AV at Medallia, where his responsibilities eventually grew to include collaboration and communications technology.

It was not a clean success story.

Ham inherited a fragmented collection of platforms, room systems, hardware, contracts, and support processes. He had not selected most of them, but he was now responsible for making them work.

He believed Zoom could solve many of the problems. His mistake was treating that conclusion as the strategy.

Medallia had already spent money on its existing systems. Those systems had internal supporters, active contracts, installed hardware, and years of decisions behind them. Even when parts of the environment were failing, sunk-cost fallacy made replacing them difficult.

Ham could explain why the technology was not working. He could not explain where the money for a replacement would come from.

He had not yet learned how to “find money” inside an organization by tracing existing spending, moving funds between programs, timing changes around renewals and hardware refreshes, and showing when each investment would return value.

He was proposing a platform fix. Medallia needed a durable IT program.

A change in technology leadership brought that gap into focus. From Ham’s perspective, Ashwin Ballal may have arrived expecting to determine whether Ham should remain in the role at all.

Instead of replacing him, Ashwin recognized that Ham understood the technology and its operational problems. What Ham lacked was the executive and financial discipline to turn those observations into a fundable program.

One piece of Ashwin’s advice stayed with him:

“We need to get you from below the table to at the table.”

Ashwin taught Ham to use accounting as part of technology strategy. They examined capital and operating expenses, contracts, support labor, maintenance, deployment costs, and the people required to keep each platform running.

Rather than ask leadership to abandon every previous investment at once, they plotted the transition over several years. They identified where existing spending could move, when contracts and hardware would reach natural decision points, which milestones should come first, and what return each phase needed to demonstrate.

Sachidanand “Sachi” Vrindavanam helped Ham turn that strategy into an operating program the wider team could implement, measure, and support.

Ashwin and Sachi taught Ham how to replace failing systems without pretending the organization was starting from a blank sheet of paper. They turned what could have ended his time at Medallia into an education in financial planning, executive communication, and durable IT leadership.

Once the program had a credible path, Ashwin saw a larger opportunity.

Medallia needed a communications platform it could afford to deploy globally. Zoom offered that platform at a discount while the product was still being built.

Medallia could help shape a product in flight, including capabilities its own IT team needed. Zoom gained a real enterprise environment where early products could be developed, tested, and improved through daily use.

Medallia’s new M Moser-designed campus gave both companies a place to work together. It was a functioning global headquarters, a customer destination, and close enough to Zoom’s San Jose offices for product teams to spend meaningful time on site.

The relationship became more than a discounted software purchase. Medallia received a scalable platform and an opportunity to influence its direction. Zoom received feedback from the people operating it and evidence of which ideas could help other customers.

Ashwin and Zoom founder Eric Yuan also recognized the public value of the partnership. Medallia could show how a customer-experience company applied the same thinking to its internal technology. Zoom could demonstrate a working enterprise deployment instead of a controlled demo.

Zoom teams became a regular presence on campus, giving Ham a direct path to Oded Gal, Cynthia Lee, and Zoom’s product leadership team.

Ham could explain the operational cost of a problem, identify a focused product change that might solve it, and help determine whether the change would benefit customers beyond Medallia. A request needed to solve a real problem, require a reasonable lift from Zoom, and create broader value.

Medallia became an active co-development site. Ham worked with Zoom product leaders and engineers on location to define, develop, test, and deploy alpha versions in working rooms.

The work included Zoom Device Management, overnight audio testing, native room controls, room scheduling, digital signage, and early Zoom Phone development. It also included CEC-based display control, remote device operations, dashboarding, and the data needed to understand which rooms were working and where attention was required.

These were not feature requests disappearing into a form. Ham helped explain why each feature should exist, what value it could create, and whether it held up in daily operation. Zoom used that feedback and evidence to turn successful experiments into products for a wider customer base.

This became Ham’s first real experience with product management. He discovered that he was more interested in building the next version of an environment than simply maintaining the current one.

He was an operator by role, but a builder at heart.

That mindset followed him into every position afterward. Ham stayed close to the people using and operating the technology, translated recurring problems into product requirements, connected them to measurable value, and helped build what came next.

Medallia became one of Zoom’s earliest public customer stories and was featured at the first Zoomtopia. For Ham, it was where operating technology, building a financial case, and shaping the product became parts of the same job.

What Ham does now

Ham carried that approach into roles with WeWork and Mersive Technologies, and eventually into Zoom.

Today, Ham is a Zoom Spaces Specialist working on strategic projects. Officially, it is an evangelist and go-to-market role. Ham thinks of himself primarily as a technology consultant.

He advises organizations as they architect collaboration and communications ecosystems that may remain in place for years. His work connects conference rooms, workplace management, scheduling, device controls, operational data, and the people responsible for keeping everything running.

Ham’s job is not to argue that Zoom is always the answer. Sometimes another platform is a better fit. He helps technology leaders understand the tradeoffs, calculate the real cost, and make a decision they can defend.

That calculation goes beyond licensing. Ham examines downtime by the minute across an organization, ticket resolution times, support labor, remote access, automated testing, monitoring, and whether a platform can prevent or correct problems without dispatching someone to the room. A less expensive license can still support a very expensive environment.

There is a sales target attached to the role, of course. Ham teaches Zoom’s field teams what the product can do, helps customers identify where it creates value, and carries their unmet needs back to the product team.

His background in professional AV and music also brings him into strategic work with higher-education institutions, music labels, media companies, and professional sports organizations across the NFL, NBA, NHL, and MLS.

In these environments, collaboration technology often intersects with teaching, recording, live production, and media operations. The customer may be deciding how a remote participant fits into a production workflow rather than building a conventional meeting room.

Ham considers the same problem in his own studio. Whether he is advising a global company or inviting someone into a music session remotely, someone outside the room should not receive a lesser version of the experience.

His role allows him to help an IT leader model five years of operating costs, work through a real-time production workflow with a media team, and carry what both customers need back to the people building Zoom.

Outside Zoom

Ham founded LaunchFront, a technology consulting practice, and Aphelion Capital Ventures, a venture studio and investment vehicle through which he works with founders and early-stage businesses.

Music remains an active part of his life. Ham maintains a full-service studio in his home, records and releases his own work, mentors hip-hop, pop, soul, R&B, and electronic artists, and takes on mixing, audio engineering, and creative-direction projects.

Away from work, Ham shares his life with his fiancée, Halley, and their dogs, Berkeley and Ada. He enjoys exploring Denver and taking long walks through its parks, trails, and open spaces, usually with at least one dog setting the pace.

This site records what Ham is learning, building, teaching, and creating. Some projects are finished, many are still changing, and a few may never make it beyond the experimental stage.

Ham is fine with that.
